southern cross sebd school, manchester

This project consisted of a new school providing educational facilities for 40 secondary school pupils under a curriculum designed for children with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD).

In addition, the facility provides new educational facilities for 18 pupils as part of Manchester’s Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) scheme. It includes a PRU Key stage 4 staff office, and extensive indoor and outdoor facilities. The building was designed with a single storey L shaped footprint with central atrium/internal street, separating the staff areas from pupil areas.

The circulation was carefully considered to allow the PRU and Southern Cross to operate independently, or together as one school. Centrally located workshop classrooms benefit from high ceilings with high level windows and sun pipes. Externally the building boasts a variety of coloured rendered facades to colour code the building and assist with way finding for pupils and visitors.
